ST 58 Electric Wheel
12 hp, 120 lb-ft torque Contains
a continuously variable planetary gear set,
which turns the shaft.
(A 6 hp motor turns the planetary gear set's
ring gear, and a 6 hp motor turns the sun gear)

Construction
of ST37 and ST74
ST37 and ST74 electric drive motors consist of either
single or dual brushless DC permanent-magnet
rotor units with rotor(s) aligned on a single
shaft. The rotors
in our permanent magnet motors have a ring of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB)
magnets around their perimeter. Because these magnets
produce their own powerful magnetic field, allowing the rotors to
have no windings. Current flow in STI motors occurs
only through the windings of the stators, which are
press-fitted into an aluminum casing. The motors are
rated as continuous duty. Each motor is normally powered by 144 VDC from a bank
of twelve 12-volt batteries and operated by a digital
controller matched to each rotor/stator unit. Other DC voltages may be used,
however, output HP will vary.
STI motor drives are designed for use in harsh
environments. The permanent-magnet rotor(s) have no brushes to
wear and replace, and the unit never needs opening for
routine maintenance. All components are made of non-corrosive
materials. The outer casing is a non-ventilated cast
aluminum enclosure, and the shaft is stainless steel.
The Electric Wheel's planet gears are bronze;
the ring and sun gears are self-lubricating Delrin,
a rigid acetyl polymer known for its strength, rigidity
and resistance to fatigue.
